Why is it that as soon as we put up our Christmas tree our cat Stanley decides to turn in to a weapons-grade machine of destruction? As funny as it is to see the memes on the internet of cats attacking Christmas decorations, it’s not so funny when your crystal stars shatter in to a million pieces! So how do you keep your cat away from the tree at Christmas? I’ve come up with some genius ideas. You can tell I have thought about this a lot!
1. Select a strong and unwavering base for the tree – the less chance kitty has to pull the tree over, the better. I speak from experience here.
2. Choose a safe location – i.e. away from any ‘launch-pads’ or furniture to help with tree access.
3. Spray the tree with orange scent. A few drops of orange oil in a water bottle topped up with water or orange peel under the tree. Cats hate the smell of orange but your house will have a lovely festive scent!
4. Consider your ornaments carefully. Some ornaments will prove irresistible because they sparkle, glow, dangle and shimmer. On the other hand, blander, less shiny or flat matte objects which don’t dangle much will have less allure for your cat. Felt, paper and plain decorations might be the best choice. And avoid anything that dangles a lot, jumps about or spins.
5. Place especially delicate items high up and ensure they are very securely fastened to the tree.
6. If all else fails, go for a totally cat-proof tree – bolt it to the ceiling!
Merry Christmas!!
